This is the remnants of the old peat harvesting plant, which was demolished in 1996. The plant was owned by Western Peat, a company that has harvested a big portion of northeastern Burns Bog. Peat was mined most intensively in the 1940's. In fact, the company made Burns Bog the biggest single peat producer in the world
overnight in 1942. Peat was harvested, dried and transported here by
railway cars. Processed peat was used as a fuel. In the first
few years of its operation, the peat was mainly used to provide energy for
magnesium processing, the magnesium was used in bombs for Allied
troops.
