Birch woodlands

Birch and other deciduous forests

This is the edge of the birch forest. Salal and bracken fern are often found in the undergrowth of a birch forest. Bog mosses are uncommon in this community.

Lodgepole pine trees are found mixed in with birch in parts of the Birch forests community. The pine trees are very tall here. Labrador tea and evergreen blackberry (not found on this picture) are common in this region.

The birch forests in Burns Bog provide the perfect environment for beavers. Birch is the rodent's favourite tree. The intersecting narrow waterways can be used as the beaver's natural protection. Beaver dams, like the one shown on the picture, are recorded in several locations in the Bog.
