Old peat processing plant

Site 4 of 14

This is the remnants of the old peat harvesting plant, which was demolished in 1996. The plant was owned by Western Peat, a company that has harvested a big portion of northeastern Burns Bog. Peat was mined most intensively in the 1940's. In fact, the company made Burns Bog the biggest single peat producer in the world overnight in 1942.  Peat was harvested, dried and transported here by railway cars.  Processed peat was used as a fuel.  In the first few years of its operation, the peat was mainly used to provide energy for magnesium processing, the magnesium was used in bombs for Allied troops.
