Sphagnum coverage

Percentage coverage by Sphagnum mosses

Burns Bog has many species of Sphagnum mosses. Sphagnum is very important to the sustainability of Burns Bog. However, due to peat harvesting and infringement into the Bog, Sphagnum cover is not existent in some places. In contrast, in the former "wet" peat harvesting sites, Sphagnum mosses has recovered. The coverage rate in those areas is above 50%, which is even higher than areas not harvested. Of course, it does not mean that the "wet method" peat harvesting is therefore totally harmless to the Bog. Sphagnum is not the only indicator of environmental health. Species diversity and destruction of habitat for threatened plant and animal species must also be considered.
