City of Vancouver Landfill

Despite its location in the Corporation of Delta, this landfill is owned by the City of Vancouver. It is the biggest landfill in Western Canada in terms of area, and tonnage received. Much of the material being dumped in the landfill can be reused, recycled, or composed. Because of people's reluctance to reduce waste, the landfill is encroaching into the bog ecosystem very rapidly. Some measures have been implemented to prevent pollution of the Bog and the surrounding, but leachates have been recorded. The weight of the landfill also alters the hydrology of the Bog. If the problem is not addressed properly, the City of Vancouver Landfill will remain the biggest threat to the very existence of Burns Bog. |

Trucks like the one shown here transport garbage into the landfill. On the surface road leading to the landfill, you will never have to wait for more than five minutes to see a fully-loaded garbage truck passing by (unless you are there during the garbage strike). The dump also accepts garbage from anybody who doesn't mind paying a fee to getting rid of chunky materials. |
