Historic Peatland Coverage in the Lower Fraser Valley Peatlands, most of them bogs, used to occupy much bigger areas. Much of Lulu Island, for instance, was covered with peat. Most of these bogs no longer exist.
The green areas are the modern extent of peatlands while the dotted lines mark the historic extent of
peatlands. Many peatlands have been eliminated. Others have shrunk substantially. Almost all of Lulu Bog has been replaced by farms. The existance of many small bogs, or remnants of bogs, are threatened by human activities. The Richmond Nature Park and Camosun Bog are facing problems of drainage and an increase in the levels of nutrients. The same problem occurs to the edge of larger bogs, but are less serious near the
centre.
